This semester I’m taking Program for Narrative and Documentary Practice, a photography + writing class. Everyone in the class shoots in “Wonderland,” an area the teacher delineates as anywhere north of Mystic Ave, bounded on the west by the Fells and on the Atlantic on the east. The first week he just had us go into Wonderland and get lost in it if we could, in order to begin getting acquainted with it — no photos required. I took some anyway.

COVID-19 Self-Quarantine Photos, Week 1
My family and I have been staying home/away from others except for the rare grocery trip, to keep ourselves from being exposed to the COVID-19 virus and help flatten the curve. I’ve been doing a bunch of things to pass time. I made a t-shirt design. It’s also available as a tote bag, mug, a…
Somerville Independence Day Fireworks
I covered the annual Independence Day fireworks at Trum Field for the Somerville Journal last night. The evening was chaotic, and I’m not exactly proud of the United States right now, but the fireworks sure did look pretty. And it was good to finally do some press photography after a long stretch of mostly food…
Haiti in the ‘Ville for Somerville Journal
I shot not one but two events last Saturday! It was exhausting and I may have gotten a tiny bit sunburned, but they were awesome events and it was good to get so much practice. Here are some photos from the second event. They ran in the Somerville Journal if you want to see them there.
Feminist Killjoys, PhD
I took some shots for Drs. Melody Hoffmann and Raechel Tiffe, the women behind feminist pop culture & politics podcast ‘Feminist Killjoys, PHD’. They’re vegan, feminist, punk, activist scholars, both of whom have degrees in Critical Media Studies. Learn more about them at their website, listen to them on SoundCloud or iTunes, or follow their…
Kelly’s Graduation Portraits
Here’s another from the archives: some solo and family portraits I did for Kelly, one of the former captains of Spirit of the Creative, when we were both graduating from Tufts last year. She’s super tall compared to most of her family, but we got clever with the stairs outside Eaton Hall for some of the…
Sew-cial Activism Costume Photos
Here’s something different: costumes. Last semester, the Tufts Drama and Dance Department offered a class called “Sew-cial Activism,” where students studied costuming as a form of political statement and made their own political costumes. See if you can guess what all these costumes are about. You can mouse over the images to see the answers….

I worked in Lynn in 1989, commuted via Everett and Revere daily. I remember feeling like I had crossed into a different culture from Tufts and Cambridge area once I entered Medford on Rt 16 to Rt 60. Rich in imagery (it was my first photo class at at Tufts where I became obsessed with “ bathtub virgins” in the streets near and around Tufts…)
Once you’re past Mystic Ave and the far reach of Tufts’ influence everything really is different! I love those bathtub virgins — they’re such a thing here that one of the example photos for “Bathtub Madonna” on Wikipedia was taken in Somerville.
